The 2021 GREEN CUP – 75TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION at The Country Club of St. Albans was a rousing success!
What a great turnout with 208 players spread out over both the Tavern Creek and Lewis & Clark golf courses. Dan Lloyd, Director of Agronomy and his staff at St. Albans had the entire facility in fantastic shape and the players had nothing but rave reviews of the playing conditions. Special thanks to Carter DeMay – Supt Tavern Creek and Andrew Kimball – Supt Lewis & Clark and their Assistant’s Ben Norby and Tom McDaniel.
Joining us on the course during this years Green Cup celebration were team members from both the SIGCSA and the HAGCSA. We also were pleased to have distinguished representatives from the GCSAA; Mark Jordan – GCSAA President, Bob Randquist – COO and Steve Randall – Director of Chapter Outreach. We even started off the event with some great bagpipe music to get everyone in the right frame of mind.
Although the weather was a little chilly the day of this event, there was plenty of food and drink for all on the courses to keep a fire burning below. A special thanks goes out to the Bayer BBQ gang Wes “Sauce King” Kleffner and Jimmy “Smoky Bones” Johnson for the tasty on-course BBQ feast and keeping the entire St Albans valley wafting with that great BBQ aroma! Also a big thanks to EZ Go carts for some extra golf carts and Grey Eagle and Major Brands for some nice additions to our drink coolers.
We were hoping to give away a couple of nice utility vehicles on two Par 3’s but although it was close, it didn’t quite happen. On those two designated Par 3 holes however, #4 Lewis and #2 Tavern, Brad Seidt 7’5″ and Gale Wickham 1’9″ respectively, gave it one heck of a try. Nice shots gentlemen! Thanks to MTI and Erb Turf Equipment with their help in supplying the vehicles for these hole-in-one contests. And another big thanks to GreensPro for their “GreensPro Greenies”, donating the closest to the pin prize for each of the (9) Par 3 holes. Fantastic!
We certainly will give a big thanks to the entire staff at The Country Club of St Albans! Everyone there went way above and beyond with their planning and efforts to ensure that this 75th celebration would be one that won’t be forgotten. There are dozens to thank but a special shout out to Laura Hodges – Director of Special Events, James Reger – Clubhouse Manager and Joe Schwent and Curt Goss PGA Pro’s. Thanks Curt for your patience and expert help throughout the tournament day and Joe, your extensive work with securing a boat load of 4-somes at some of the best golf venues in StL for our silent auction was a walk-off home run! Thanks to all of you at St Albans!
Couldn’t have done this without our generous sponsors! These companies are the backbone of this Association and we are extremely grateful for their continued support of all our programs and activities, including the Green Cup! I also want to acknowledge the tremendous response we received from tee sponsors for this grand celebration. Thank you very much!
